A whale (and a dolphin) of a time in St. Lucia!
Anyone who has ever been snorkelling or scuba diving will tell you the same. Fish are as curious about us (they are in their own habitat after all) as we are about them. With this in mind it is no surprise that our Whale and dolphin watching St Lucia spotting tours are so well attended by both tourists and the incumbent attractions . . . whales and dolphins!
We are spoilt for choice in St. Lucia as there are over thirty species of whales and dolphins, making Whale watching in St. Lucia an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.. Dolphins (don’t they always look like they are smiling?) love nothing more than to showcase their acrobatic skills in our boats’ wake. Whales, well, they are far too big and busy for such acrobatics, but you will never forget the first time you hear one clear its blowhole with an almighty whoosh before majestically slipping back beneath the waves with its huge flukes (often called the hand of God), signalling a final farewell.
Exodus Boat Charters cruise down the west coast of St. Lucia towards Marigot Bay and Soufriere, in the tried and tested routes used by a variety of whales including Pilot and Hump-Back. But the dolphins are not to be outdone with Spinner, Bottlenose and Spotted species usually putting in an appearance.
On our return you will have the opportunity to swim and snorkel in the Marine Reserve. We stop either at Anse Cochon or Anse Chastanet, both known as some of the best snorkel sites on the island.

1. What species of whales and dolphins can we see?
St Lucia waters are home to several whale and dolphin species. Humpback whales migrate through December-April, offering spectacular breaching and singing displays. Resident species include Sperm Whales, Pilot Whales, and various dolphin species such as Spinner Dolphins, Spotted Dolphins, and Bottlenose Dolphins. Other marine mammals occasionally sighted include manatees and sea turtles.
2. When is the best time to see whales?
Humpback whale season peaks from January through March when whales migrate through Caribbean waters. This is the best time for viewing these magnificent creatures. However, dolphin and pilot whale sightings are possible year-round. We adjust our tours seasonally to maximize wildlife viewing opportunities. Check current sightings when planning your trip.
3. How close do we get to the whales and dolphins?
We follow responsible wildlife viewing guidelines and international marine mammal regulations. We maintain a safe, respectful distance (typically 100+ yards) to observe animals without disrupting natural behaviour. This distance still provides excellent viewing and photography opportunities with modern optics and telephoto lenses. Our guides are experts at locating and identifying marine mammals.
4. What if we don’t see whales on our tour?
While we have an excellent track record of sightings during peak season, wildlife viewing cannot be guaranteed as animals are wild and unpredictable. If whales aren’t spotted, we’ll focus on dolphin watching and showcase St Lucia’s beautiful coastline and seascapes. Many guests find the dolphin interactions and ocean experience equally rewarding and memorable.
5. How long is a whale and dolphin watching tour?
Tours typically last 3-4 hours, departing early morning when whale activity is highest and sea conditions are calmest. The itinerary includes time traveling to prime viewing areas, actively searching for marine mammals, observing and photographing sightings, and learning about whale and dolphin behaviour from our expert naturalist guides. Seasickness medication is available if needed.
